Abstract: 

We start with a simple problem of estimating the number of pairs of positive integers whose product is bounded by certain constant. This problem is related to a fast algorithm of computing high dimensional interpolation approximations named sparse grid approximation or hyperbolic cross. The sparse grid approximation will be used to solve high dimensional problems such as numerical solutions of stochastic partial differential equations.

Abstract: 

In this work we study a model for steady fluid flow in a saturated deformable (elastic) porous medium. The model which was developed in the context of modeling one of the processes in paper production. It is distinguished in its use of a Kozeny-Carman type relation for the fluid's permeability, resulting in a quasilinear elliptic system. We will discuss the well-posedness of the system as well as the finite element method for approximating solutions of this nonlinear problem.
