Abstract:
The word ''eigenpair'' means an eigenvalueand its eigenvector (eigenfunction). The word ''leading'' is the leading termin a spectrum, the leading eigenvalue, for instance. It has different names indifferent context: the first nontrivial eigenvalue, the principal eigenvalue,the maximal eigenvalue, and so on.
The talk introduces our study on the topicin a backward way. First, we present some new exciting results on computing themaximal eigenpair for matrices. The key for this is finding efficient initialsfor the known algorithms. The initials come from our previous study on theestimation of the leading eigenpair. Next, we survey shortly the unified basicestimates for the leading eigenvalues in various situation, mainly forone-dimensional elliptic operator. In the last part of the talk, we mention ouroriginal goal for the study is looking for mathematical tools to study thephase transitions in statistical mechanics.
